Cape Town

Cape Point – Cape Town

Cape Point is situated in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Cape Point is one of the greatest landmarks in the world: a wild and scenically spectacular area at the tip of the Cape Peninsula and African continent. A trip to Cape Point is a must for any Cape Town visitor; therefore Cape Point is probably visited by more tourists than any other tourist attraction in South Africa.

The dramatic topography & Mediterranean-type climate offers an incredibly rich variety of plants and animals - brown and white bontebok antelopes, dawdling tortoises and dashing ostriches can be seen on a drive through the pristine nature reserve. The nature reserve at Cape Point is home to a variety of indigenous animals, including the African Baboon who will not hesitate to jump onto your car for a “free ride”. The flora too deserves your attention with 2 200 species of plants including giant headed protea bushes flowering in winter and pretty little ericas which you will not see anywhere else on earth.

It is said that the two oceans, the Indian and Atlantic meet at Cape Point and it is true that the warm Mozambique current from the east mingles with the cold Benguela current from the west, but there is no straight defining line. Regardless, Cape Point is one of the greatest landmarks in the world and there could be no better place to have a meeting of two such majestic oceans. Cape Point is a splendid place with lots of scenic views. In the springtime, the nature reserve transforms into blankets of wild flowers which vibrantly colour the landscape inviting visitors to the spectacular views at the peninsula's edge. The impressive views of the vast Oceans towards the South and West, the Hottentots Holland Mountains across False Bay to the East and the Cape Peninsula to the North, can be seen from the lighthouse at Cape Point which is situated on the highest sea cliffs in South Africa. The new lighthouse at Cape Point is the most powerful in the world, with an electric light equal to the power of 19 million candle power.

The many walking trails offer nature lovers the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife. There are trails leading to the picnic areas with BBQ sites (or for South Africans, braai sites), beach coves and scenic viewpoints. While the reserve itself is stellar for its natural beauty, clearly the trip to the peninsula is not complete without a visit to the massive and spectacular headland, the southwestern most tip of the African continent. Cape Point's trademark turbulent waters and 300 metre sheer cliffs encompass viewers who may be lucky enough to spot seals, dolphins and southern right whales.

Facilities at Cape Point include the Two Oceans restaurant, an information centre with email capabilities, 2 curio shops and a funicular for those not ambitious enough for the 15 minute hike to the point. For diving enthusiasts, Cape Point is also known for its stunning dive and snorkel spots due to the colourful and fascinating marine life inhabiting these waters. On calm days the visibility is good for both snorkeling and diving.
